The results of St. Petersburg in 2001 were the best in the North-West Federal District in import and the second best in export.
Foreign trade turnover of St. Petersburg in 2001 reached 5872.4 mln USD, or 117% against the turnover of 2000. The balance of foreign trade is negative, with import exceeding export by 2.1 times.

Dynamics of Foreign Trade of St. Petersburg in 1997-2001 (mln USD)

In 2001 trading operations were carried out with partners from 155 countries. Over this period the value of export reduced in all major commodity groups, while the value of import grew in all groups of the commodity structure. 93% of commodity turnover relate to trade with foreign countries. The largest trading counterparts of St. Petersburg are Germany, USA, Finland, China and the Ukraine.

Export
The total export volume of St. Petersburg in cost parameters of 2001, as compared to 2000, decreased by 24%.
The export of St. Petersburg enterprises to foreign countries significantly exceeds deliveries to CIS countries. By the results of 2001, the value of exports to foreign countries exceeds the deliveries to CIS countries by 11.4 times.
As compared to 2000, the value of export deliveries to foreign countries decreased by 26%, while the deliveries to CIS countries increased by 12%.
The structure of export from St. Petersburg in 2001 has not changed as compared to 2000. The leading deliveries were of machine-building industry products (46% of export). Cost parameters of this commodity group decreased by 26%, as compared to 2000. The share of this commodity group, due to the general export reduction, decreased only by 1%.
The second place is taken by the export of ferrous and non-ferrous metals. The share of this commodity group is 24%, which is 1% less than the similar index of the previous year. The cost parameter reduced by 28%.
The third place in export from St. Petersburg in 2001 comes from timber and timber products. The share of this commodity group is 9%. The cost parameters grew by 2%.

The leading partner of St. Petersburg enterprises in export is Finland (14%). Deliveries to this country included the following commodity groups: machine-building products, ferrous metals, aluminium, timber. Finland is followed by the USA (9.9%), then China (9.6), Germany (9.4), India (7.8).
The share of CIS countries in 2001 is 8.1% (in 2000 - 5.4%). The largest deliveries were made to Kazakhstan (3.2%) and the Ukraine (3.0%).
Import
During 2001 the volume of import was growing. As compared to 2000, import increased by 59%.
By the results of 2001, the value of import deliveries from foreign countries is 16 times bigger than the value of import deliveries from CIS countries.
As compared to 2000, the volume of import deliveries from foreign countries grew by 65%, and the volume of import deliveries from CIS countries - by 1%.
The structure of import has not changed in 2001 as compared to 2000. The leading deliveries are food products. The cost parameters of this commodity group grew by 51%. Their share in the total import of St. Petersburg makes 43%. The largest deliveries were meat and meat by-products (12.4% in the total import volume), edible fruits and nuts (7.6%), vegetable oil and animal fat (5.2%).
The second place is still taken by the import of machine-building products. The share of this commodity group in 2001 is 31%. The cost parameter of the import of machine-building products,as compared to the similar period of 2000, grew by 87%.
The third place is taken by petrochemical products. The share of this commodity group in 2001, as compared to 2000, decreased by 1% to make 9.9%. The cost volume of this commodity group grew by 37%.
Among the countries supplying goods to St. Petersburg the first place belongs to Germany (20% of the total import volume), the second place - to the USA (12.6%), the third place - to Finland (8%), followed by the Ukraine (4.5%), France, the Netherlands.
