Retail trade turnover, including public catering turnover, in 2001 made 121.7 billion roubles (appr. 4.2 billion USD). For the first time over the last years the monthly increase of commodity turnover exceeded 10%.

Retail turnover of trade and public catering per capita in 2001 made up 25 thousand roubles (in 2000 -18.8 thousand roubles).
The sales of shops, supermarkets, department shops and other trading companies increased by 18%.
The volume of goods sold on the markets and trade areas decreased to 21% of the total turnover in 2001, against 23% in 2000.
The trade stock was provided for 24-28 days. Supply of St. Petersburg population with foodstuffs was stable, the satiation reached 100%. The assortment of food staffs in the largest shops is 8-10 thousand items, of consumer goods - up to 40 thousand items.
Winter storage of potatoes and vegetables was organised for the provision of the city social institutions.
21 purchasing outlets were organised for buying fruits and vegetables from market gardeners, including 17 of them - on the market places. 46 tons of potatoes, vegetables and berries were bought.
2117 free-of-charge selling places were organized, including over 700 - at the market places, for selling products from market gardeners.
In 2001 a special program was developed for the creation of objects of consumer market in St. Petersburg, that foresees a step-by-step commissioning of new construction objects during the period until 2005.
As of 1 January 2002, 9230 stationary retail shops are working in the city, including 4081 food shops, 4970 consumer goods shops and 179 mixed goods shops.
In 2001 the retail trade network increased by 354 enterprises and made 104% against 2000. The number of shops selling foodstuffs increased by 105, the number of shops selling consumer goods - by 248.
Large trading enterprises were opened: Trading House "Kievsky", Trading Complex "Nevsky", ZAO "Adamant", Trading Centre "Admiralteysky", ZAO "Dom Mod Plus", Trading Complex "Mebel-City", City Trading Centre "Xanta".
The number of distributive networks in St. Petersburg has increased. Now the networks comprise 110 companies, which makes 12 % of the total number of shops in the city.
Successfully developing are discount shops selling reasonably priced foodstuffs and complementary goods. Discount shops chain includes 105 enterprises, with 41 opened in 2001: "Pyatyorochka" (65), OOO "Atrotorg", "Kopeyka" (18), ZAO "KIT", "Dixi" (13), ОАО "Uniland Neva", "Matveyev & Partners" (9). Pensioners and indigent people who are receiving their pensions and subsidies at the banking terminals located at the post offices, can buy foodstuffs at 94 discount shops of the "SOS" network opened by ОАО "Petrovsky Narodny Bank" jointly with "Colibri" Concern in 2001.
Public catering was intensively developing.
Over 4 thousand enterprises are working in the city, with 35 opened in 2001. The network growth made 109 %. The program for fast food net development in 2001 is implemented. The net increased by 178 enterprises to exceed 1200, which makes 31% of the total number of public catering enterprises.

Volume of payable consumer services in 2001 made up 41.6 billion roubles (1.3 billion USD).

The cost of the minimal food set of basic food products in February 2001 was 1060 roubles 98 copecks. *In 2001 the average monthly income per capita in St. Petersburg is 130$, against 80 $ in Russia. In St. Petersburg in 2001 the average income of the people belonging to group "10% of the most well-to-do families" made 480$ per person/month, while for the group of "10% of the poorest families" it made 30$ per. person/month. The total money funds of the citizens of St. Petersburg in 2000 are estimated as 4950 mln USD. Expenditure Pattern of the citizens of St. Petersburg in 2001 (services, foodstuffs and drinks, consumer goods - %% of the total revenue.

For comparison - in 2000 the citizens of St. Petersburg spent 17% of their money on services, 41% on foodstuffs, and 36% on consumer goods.

According to the data of the Association of Commercial Banks of St. Petersburg, the increase of deposits of physical entities in the banks of St. Petersburg in 2001 made appr. 1000 mln USD. The growth of savings of individuals made appr. 300 mln USD
