THE THIRD LARGEST

BirdOne of the world's most beautiful cathedrals, built between 1818 and 1858 to A. Montferrand's design and named in honour of St. Isaac of Dalmatia, on whose day (30 May) Peter I was born. The leading craftsmen of the day were involved in its construction, including the sculptors I. Vitali and P. Klodt, the painters K. Bryullov and F. Bruni, and the bell-maker I. Stukolkin from Valdai. The immaculate interior of the cathedral is astonishingly beautiful, containing a wealth of paintings, sculptures and mosaics, as well as an effective combination of different coloured stone and gilding. St. Isaac's is the third largest domed cathedral in the world, with a height of 101.5 metres. It has 112 columns of varying sizes; 72 of them are granite monoliths, weighing between 64 and 114 tonnes, which surround the porticos and the base of the dome, the first time in history that columns of such a size had been installed at a height of over 40 metres. There is a wonderful panoramic view of St. Petersburg from the colonnades: you can see Nevsky Prospekt, the spires of the Admiralty and of Peter and Paul Cathedral, Palace Square and University Embankment.Opening hours: 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., except Wednesday. Admission prices for citizens of Russia and the CIS: Cathedral - 15 roubles, Colonnade - 8 roubles. Admission prices for foreigners: Cathedral - 160 roubles, Colonnade - 60 roubles.
