Composer, born in St Petersburg, Russia. He studied at the Conservatory there, and composed his first symphony in 1925. His music was at first highly successful, but his operas and ballets were later criticized by government and press for a failure to observe the principles of "Soviet realism'. He was reinstated by his fifth symphony (1937), and subsequently composed prolifically in all forms. He wrote 15 symphonies, as well as violin, piano, and cello concertos, chamber music, and choral works. |
