THOMAS DE THOMON Jean Francois (1760-1813)
An architect. Is Swiss. Studied in the Academy of Arts in Paris and Rome (80-s). Since 1799 worked in Russia. Since 1800 - an academician. was the lecturer in the Academy of Arts (professor since 1810) and in the Institute of the engineering communications (since 1811). In his constructions he reworked the methods of the Ancient Greece ( mostly Greek archaics) on the basis of the traditions of Russian classicism. The characteristic features of Thomas de Thomon's buildings are: enlarged forms,stressing the power and monumentality, the regular simplicity of the volume solutions, laconically decorated facades and interiors. The most famous constructions are: the barns of Salny Buyan (1805-1806, are not preserved),the Stock Exchange, the House of Laval, two fountains on the road from Petersburg to Tsarskoye Selo (1809; near Kazan Cathedral and in Moscow Victory Park today); the mausoleum of the Emperor Paul I ("To my Husband and Benefactor") in the park of Pavlovsk. Among the graphical works the most famous is the "Reminiscences about Italy"(Indian ink,pen). Buried in Smolensky Lutheran Cemetery, later his remains were removed to Necropolis of the 18 century.
