STASOV Vasily Petrovich (1769-1848)
An architect. Lived in St.-Petersburg since 1794. An academician of the Academy of Arts since 1811. In 1816 was appointed to the position of one of the Chief Architects of the "Committee supervising the Building and Hydraulic Works", since 1817 directed the palace construction in Petersburg and in the out-of-town residences. He developed the main ideas and compositional methods of the last period of Russian classicism and added much solemnity to the architectural appearance of his constructions : the Barracks of Pavlovsky Regiment (Lenenergo today),the building of the Stables supervisory Department (1817-1823), Yamskoy market (1817-1819),the Narva Triumphal Gate and the Moscow Triumphal Gate, the Savior Transfiguration's Cathedral and Troitsky Cathedral - all in Petersburg; the cast iron gate "To my beloved colleagues", Manege, the Grand Hothouse and the Stables - all in Tsarskoye Selo (Pushkin today). He completed the ensemble of the Smolny Cathedral, participated in the reconstruction of the Winter Palace after the fire in 1837 . During 1843-1848 lived at Galernaya street, 40. Buried in Necropolis of the 18 century. The memorial panel is installed at the house, where he used to live during 1817-1830. In 1969 in the fence of the Troitsky cathedral the bust of Stasov was installed.
