RASTRELLI Varfolomei Varfolomeyevich ( Bartolomeo Franchesco ) (1700-1771)
An architect. An Italian. In 1716 came to Petersburg with his father, B.C.Rastrelli. Studied abroad (probably in Italy) between 1725 and 1730. In 1730-1760 was the court architect, since 1771- the honourable free member of the Academy of Arts.Being the greatest representative of Russian baroque, Rastrelli has changed the traditions of the European baroque, influenced by Russian art culture. The characteristic features of his buildings are: the large volume of the ensemble, use of the bell-towers, cupola, porches, thin columns, intensive colours of the walls, rich gilding, natural motives in decoration (Smolny Monastery Cathedral, 1748-1764). In 1745-1755 Rastrelli worked on the Grand Palace construction in Peterhof (Petrodvorets today): he enlarged the middle part of the old palace of the Peter the Great's times, added the Palace Church and the "Wing beneath the Coat of Arms", newly made all the interiors, enriched with the intensive colours and splendid decoration. The constructions of 1750-1760 are especially expressive. The relief of the architectural forms and the complicated rhythm of the colonnades are combined with the clarity of the volumes, clear silhouette and strict planning - the Grand (Catherine) Palace in Tsarskoye Selo (Pushkin today), Vorontsov Palace, Stroganov Palace, Shteggelman's House. In 1754-1762 Rastrelli constructed the monumental and magnificent ensemble of the Winter Palace, outstanding with its grand conception and festivity. Probably died in Petersburg. The square in front of the Smolny Monastery (former Yekaterininskaya) was named after Rastrelli. |
