(1744-1817)

An architect, the representative of classicism. An Italian. Since 1761 (according to the other data sources - since 1763) studied in Rome. Since 1780 worked in Russia. The first significant works of Quarenghi -the English Palace in Peterhof (1781-1794, was destroyed in 1942) - the classical monumental building, with the very strict and expressive forms, with the huge collonnades and wide external staircase, leading to the garden and the number of the small structures in the suburbs of the city: the Hospital with the Church in  Pavlovsk (1781-1784), Lanskoy mausoleum (1784-1786) and Concert Hall Pavilion (1782-1788) in Tsarskoye Selo (Pushkin). The most famous works of Quarenghi in 1780-1800  - the laconically composed Academy of Sciences (1783-1785),   the Assignation Bank, the Hermitage Theatre  and the gallery to place the Rafael Lodges copies, the "Study" in Anichkov Palace, Horse Guards Manege, Smolny Institute.  The constructions of Quarenghi have its characteristic features: strictly planned, simply composed, with the plastic forms, such as magnificent collonnades, plain walls and sculpture. The example of the suburbian structures of this period is the Alexander Palace in Tsarskoye Selo with the magnificent collonnade of the main facade, connecting the building with the park. Among the multiple scetches of Quarenghi, depicting the qrandeuse of Russian architecture is "Mikhailovsky Castle" (Indian ink, water colour). Quarenghi published the albums with the engraving projects of the Hermitage Theatre and Assignation Bank (1787 and 1791) and the collection of his projects (1810). During 1780-1783 he lived at Nevsky avenue, 15. Initially was buried in Volkov's Lutheran Cemetery , in 1967 his remains were buried in the Cemetery of Alexander Nevsky Laura (Monastery). The former Dolgorukovsky lane, between Rastrelli square and Smolny passage, was renamed into Quarenghi's lane in 1923. The monument to Quarenghi is standing in front of the Assignation Bank (1967).
