BENOIS Leonti Nikolayevich (1856-1928)
An architect. N.L.Benois' son, A.N.Benois' brother. Graduated from the Academy of Arts in 1879, since 1885 was an academician. Since 1892 was professor and during 1903-06 and 1911-17 - the principal of the Academy of Arts ( his students: V.G. Gelfreikh, A.I. Dmitriyev, L.V. Rudnev, I.A. Fomin, V.A. Shchuko, A.V. Shchusev and others ). Was the editor of the magazine "The architect" (1894-98). The distinct architectural composition, expressive silhouettes, unanimity of the whole ensemble, the resourcefulness and skillfully made details are the characteristic features of the works of Benois, the adherent of classicism. His masterpieces are: Academic Cappella named after M.I.Glinka (Moika river emb., 20; 1885-89),Midwifery and Gynaecology Institute (Mendeleyev's line, 3; 1897-1904), the White Hall of Mariinsky Palace (1907- 08), the printing plant "Pechatny Dvor" (Tchkalovsky avenue, 15; 1908-10), the Western block of the State Russian Museum (1914-16), living houses (Kirovsky avenue, 24, 26/28). In 1910-13 designed the project of Petersburg reconstruction with M.M.Peretyatkovich and A.Ye.Yenakiyev. Buried in the Writers' Footbridge.
